Research Ethics within our (Applied Research Exceptional Talent Program) is an advanced training course designed to prepare research professionals, applied researchers, research administrators, and project leaders to navigate the ethical, procedural, and governance dimensions of research involving human participants in Canada.
Grounded in the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS 2), the course examines the ethical foundations of research involving humans, including Respect for Persons, Concern for Welfare, and Justice, and applies these principles across the full life cycle of research design, review, conduct, data management, dissemination, and institutional oversight.
The course emphasizes the practical application of research ethics in contemporary professional environments, including applied research, institutional research, community-based inquiry, and industry-linked projects.
Participants examine issues such as determining the scope of ethics review, assessing risks and benefits, designing meaningful consent processes, ensuring fairness in participant selection, managing privacy and confidentiality, addressing conflicts of interest, understanding the role of research ethics boards, and engaging ethically with Indigenous communities and research contexts.
Through case analysis, reflective application, and professionally relevant scenarios, the course supports the development of ethical judgment, institutional awareness, and responsible research practice.
